100-mile Bike Trip and Featherly Park Camping

by Michael Black

We started our trip at Oak Middle School in Los Alamitos at 8:00am Saturday morning, November 15th.  There were 9 boys and 2 adults riding.  We rode down the San Gabriel River channel to Seal Beach, then along Ocean Blvd to Pacific Coast Highway and down to Huntington Beach.  There were many people walking and running along the beach for another event, so we had to ride together very carefully to avoid hitting anyone.  We took a short break at Anaheim Stadium to have some snacks for energy, rest our legs and wait for everyone to get caught up into one group again.

After about 25 – 30 miles, we stopped for lunch at a park along the Santa Ana River Trail, which we had been following ever since we turned inland at the end of Huntington Beach.  Some of the boys had Subway sandwiches and others had sack lunches.  It was a much needed food and water break.  Most of the trip up to Featherly Park it was raining or misting on us.  Luckily it never rained too hard that we had to stop and once we got closer to our destination, the weather started to clear up.  When we reached Featherly Park Saturday afternoon around 2:30pm, we started to pitch all our tents.  After we finished everyone was very hungry and we all ate dinner.  The boys ate beef stew with French bread and the adults had tacos and nachos.  It was getting pretty dark by that time so everyone shared a skit they performed around the campfire.  After that everyone had free time until they finally dozed off to sleep.  It wasn’t real easy to sleep because of the rain and there were loud helicopters and a freeway behind us.  It poured in the middle of the night.  Our bikes were soaked in the morning.

In the morning we got on our way on Sunday after a breakfast of sausages, muffins, oatmeal and orange juice.  Luckily it was clear outside and there wasn’t much of a breeze either.  During the ride, everyone got spread out along the trail again.  Every once in a while, Jaime had to stop so that everyone could catch up.  These short breaks gave us a chance to have a water break.   For lunch, we stopped at Zack’s restaurant along Huntington Beach and chowed down.  At around 4:00pm we got back to our final destination, Oak Middle School, tired but with a sense of achievement.
